Palmanova is an Italian walled town in the Friuli region of northern Italy. The fortress town was built in 1593, during the Italian War of 1591–1597, by the Republic of Venice. The town was designed in the form of a nine-pointed star, and is encircled by an impressive hexagonal wall. The walls, which are five metres thick, have three gates, each guarded by two towers. The town features the main square, the Piazza Grande with its 16th-century Venetian mansion, the Palazzo Pubblico, and several churches. The fortifications and several of the buildings have been well preserved over the centuries, and the town is considered a fine example of military engineering. Today, Palmanova is a popular tourist destination as well as an important site of historical interest.
