As lights, telephones, and water pipes became popular, symbols of civilization such as airplanes and automobiles flooded Taiwan.
Cafés became the fad of the era, with pop culture, movies, gramophone and jazz music.
People's mindsets were opened, free love replaced arranged marriages, dresses replaced kimonos, and Western-style education became popular. It was Taiwan in the 1930s.
Hayashi Department Store (Hayashi 百貨) is known as "Five-story House" (Gō͘-chàn-lâu-á) to Tainan people. It was founded by Japanese businessman Hayashi Houichi.
