Sambyeon Waterfall is an exquisite natural wonder that left a deep impression on Gyeomjae Jeongseon, a master of Korean landscape painting during the Joseon period. It is beautifully depicted in a painting called "Sambyeon-do" by the artist.

Situated alongside the road leading from Sincheolwon to Yonghwajeo Reservoir, Sambyeon Waterfall is a hidden gem. Most visitors deliberately seek out this breathtaking waterfall, but it's conveniently located right next to the road, making it a pleasant surprise for those driving by.

Before passing through the tunnel, you'll find a side road where you can park two to three cars. If you visit on a weekend, you can also make use of the spacious parking lot just beyond the tunnel.

Sambyeon Waterfall, nestled in the foothills of Myeongseongsan Mountain, boasts a height of 20 meters. Its cascading waters create a picturesque scene as they drop in three distinct stages. The name "Sambyeon" originates from the fact that the water flows down in three stages, forming a deep, pot-like basin beneath, hence the name "Sambyeon" meaning "three-stage basin."

If you park in the official parking area, it's only a short 100-meter walk to reach the waterfall. The path to the waterfall is refreshingly cool as it passes through a tunnel. It is advisable to use the parking lot rather than parking on the side road.

Once you emerge from the tunnel, you'll find a sign indicating that you've arrived at the Hantan River Geopark. Cheorwon, Yeoncheon, and Pocheon, all located along the Hantan River, have been designated as geoparks with stunning natural landscapes.

For an excellent viewing experience of Sambyeon Waterfall, there is a spacious observation deck.

Gyeomjae Jeongseon, on his way to Geumgangsan Mountain, passed through Cheorwon and was so captivated by the beauty of Sambyeon Waterfall that he immortalized it in his painting. The synchronization between the artwork and the actual scene is remarkable. In the past, you could descend below the waterfall if the water volume was low, but currently, it's not advisable due to the high water flow.

The best time to enjoy Sambyeon Waterfall is in early August after the monsoon season. It's the period of the year with the most abundant water flow in South Korea, offering a chance to witness the natural wonder in all its glory. Visiting in autumn, winter, or spring might lead to disappointment as the water volume tends to be lower during these seasons.

If you plan to visit, it's a good idea to arrive around 10 AM for optimal lighting conditions for photography. Going in the late afternoon, just before sunset, should also provide great photo opportunities.

Cheorwon, where Sambyeon Waterfall is located, is known for its extensive volcanic terrain. Like Jeju Island, it features well-developed columnar jointing, numerous waterfalls, and breathtaking cliff formations. While Sambyeon Waterfall may not have direct geological connections to volcanic activity, exploring the nearby Jaein Waterfall in Yeoncheon and Bidoongan Waterfall in Pocheon would complement your visit nicely.

Nestled in the northern region of Gyeonggi Province, these waterfalls offer a mystical, otherworldly ambiance. They've even served as the backdrop for historical dramas in Korean cinema.

The sight and sound of the refreshing waterfall alone are enough to relieve the heat, making it a perfect stop for travelers in Cheorwon. A short stroll from your car will unveil the extraordinary beauty of this location, a rare treasure in South Korea.
